Physiotherapy

A recent report noted additional benefits specifically for people suffering with long term physical and mental health conditions which included chronic pain and anxiety. It proved to be a great activity for all ages with studies showing that swimming improves quality of life for the elderly which also shows reduced falls and other acute injuries.

Of course, all physical activities have the potential to result in injury and swimming is no exception. Common reasons for swimming injuries include:

Joints can be put in extreme repetitive motion, depending on the stroke
Failure to ensure proper stroke technique exacerbates overuse fatigue
Existing injuries can cause imbalance and compensation leading to further injury
Poor warm-up can also cause further damage

Please don’t let this put you off getting your swimming costume on and enjoying the water!

Ian was recommended to me by my Physiotherapist as a form of low impact exercise to keep on top of a long term back injury. I was extremely dubious to begin with as due to having my injury for a several years now I was very worried that swimming may aggravate it further. As a consequence of my injury I also felt that I no longer had the strength in my legs and core to ever be able to swim! Ian's patience, vast knowledge and most importantly understanding of my injury constantly reassures me that everything I am being taught is always with my injury in mind. As someone who started off as a complete non swimmer and didn't want to set foot in a swimming pool just a couple of months ago I really cannot recommend Ian enough. My confidence in water has grown hugely and I can already feel the benefits that learning to swim has on my body. I am extremely grateful to finally have a form of exercise that helps me to keep on top of my injury and I only wish that Ian had been recommended to me sooner!
